about

Everything that exists can be called nature. Even the urban environment. It is all one. Perhaps we sometimes perceive certain things and phenomena as somewhat alien - unnatural, harmful. But this is only an anthropocentric view. A biased view. A view from within us, from our own values.

Nature knows no values, but it does know balance. Man and his destruction of the environment will not destroy nature. Nature will regain its balance. If a pendulum swings strongly one way, it will then swing strongly the other way. But perhaps the balance that will follow will be one without humans? Perhaps this is a good thing? Does nature know good and bad, evil, love? Or are these merely human inventions, side-effects of consciousness? Is the acceptance of self-destruction unnatural? Does it go against human nature? Is human nature anything more than simple selfishness? Are love, compassion, and the concept of good merely means of survival, of human beings surviving with themselves?

I recorded this collection of compositions near the centre of Ljubljana, on a temporary creative island called Krater. In a space that, through its very existence, redefines the ruins of the urban ecosystem. A space that is an in-between station in the countless transformations of the environment. Like everything that is within time.

◉◉◉

‘Spaces’ are a series of live recordings that strive to capture the synergy between performer and space, following the simple premise of “One performer, one instrument, one space.” They take place mainly in environments that are in one way or another isolated, hidden or forgotten from the outside world, but are much part of it nonetheless.

The recordings are made entirely live, without an audience, within a day or two. We capture the space with a stereo pair of microphones, while the performer is listened to by a few microphones up close. We use field recorders instead of computers, allowing us to record even in more inaccessible and remote locations. Post-production and sound processing are minimal.
