about

Boštjan Gombač is a multi-instrumentalist, performer, composer and actor. From a young age, he has been inspired by the sounds and stories that musical instruments carry, and his childlike sense of exploration and pushing the boundaries between genres of music have constantly opening up new horizons in his musical expression.

His approach to creating and performing music is sincere and spontaneous, often encompassing a variety of feelings within a single performance, from deep and abstract musical journeys to unpredictable, almost mischievous ideas that add the performer’s unique stamp and sparkle to the music.

◉◉◉

Dvorana Union (Union Hall) is the only surviving building of the former Götze brewery, the leading and most modern brewery of the mid-19th century Maribor and Slovenian Styria. In 1911, the central building, the Götze Hall (today’s Union Hall), was built and remains one of the last important representatives of neo-Baroque architecture. At that time it was the largest event space in Maribor. Due to its importance and authenticity, it is protected as a cultural and historical monument.

Its acoustic properties are best revealed when the hall has no audience and is filled with the sound of a single instrument. The precise and balanced reverberation interacts with the performer, inspiring him to explore the instrument fully and across the full frequency range - and thus giving the listener of this album an authentic experience of space and performance that was only possible without an audience.

◉◉◉

‘Spaces’ are a series of live recordings that strive to capture the synergy between performer and space, following the simple premise of “One performer, one instrument, one space.” They take place mainly in environments that are in one way or another isolated, hidden or forgotten from the outside world, but are much part of it nonetheless.

The recordings are made entirely live, without an audience, within a day or two. We capture the space with a stereo pair of microphones, while the performer is listened to by a few microphones up close. We use field recorders instead of computers, allowing us to record even in more inaccessible and remote locations. Post-production and sound processing are minimal.
